Community Fruit Tree Project

A single apple tree can produce 100kg of fruit a year - a vital source of nutrition and income for people living in impoverished districts of Addis Ababa. Since 2006, Trees for Cities has been working with EWNHS (Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society) and has so far provided 3,000 apple, pear and plum trees for households and community groups in deprived areas of the city.

We show beneficiaries how to look after their fruit trees, and teach them useful tips, like how to make organic compost and how best to maintain their trees to get returns. Excess fruit is sold, and we encourage beneficiaries to reinvest some of the money they make by purchasing more trees for the future.

“Trees are a luxury for all of us and we need this luxury for our health, mind and soul. Places become sad when there is no green, no life present. Trees balance our lives. I am happy to support Trees for Cities with all my heart.”
