Lawn Memorial Park

On 11 February 2009, Trees for Cities officially launched its partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council by planting 860 trees at Lawn Memorial Park, Woodingdean. Trees for Cities were joined on the day by pupils from nearby Woodingdean Primary School and student volunteers participating in the charity’s Plant Your Future programme to plant a variety of trees including Oak, Ash, Yew, Holly and Sweet Chestnut.

Woodland to the side of the current planting site was destroyed in the hurricane of 1987, then replanted shortly after. The Trees for Cities planting will provide a new generation of trees for this area of woodland, thus ensuring its continued health and survival.

We were delighted to welcome both the Mayor of Brighton Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn, and Trees for Cities' Trustee and Brighton resident Jake Kempston. The tree planting is funded through HSBC and first direct’s Virtual Forest initiative, which encouraged customers to switch from paper to electronic statements.

“Trees are a luxury for all of us and we need this luxury for our health, mind and soul. Places become sad when there is no green, no life present. Trees balance our lives. I am happy to support Trees for Cities with all my heart.”
