Brayards Estate October 2011

This project is running from September 2011 – March 2012

We have planted 20 new orchard trees.

Brayards Estate in Southwark currently comprises of two residential housing blocks and a large area of underused green space. Trees for Cities is working alongside the Tenants and Residents Association and the London Borough of Southwark to create beautiful and functional community spaces.

Community Planting Day February 2012

In our second year on the estate, TfC will be transforming a caged tarmac area (recently used as site storage for construction) into a community vegetable area and wildlife garden. The area will include a variety of beds at differing heights to be accessible to all residents, a potting shed, seating area for those all important gardening cups of tea and infrastructure for composting and water harvesting. We shall also be planting 20 fruit trees to create a small fruiting orchard for local residents.

Following a community orchard planting day and schools workshops in February we will be opening the community garden in March providing some informal training to get people started. We have also been working with the community to investigate the possibility of bee-keeping on the estate.

This project is supported by Capital FM's Help a Capital Child, Garfield Weston Foundation, the Financial Times, and RE:LEAF.

“Trees are a luxury for all of us and we need this luxury for our health, mind and soul. Places become sad when there is no green, no life present. Trees balance our lives. I am happy to support Trees for Cities with all my heart.”
