Manorfield Primary School - January 2011

This project is running from April 2011 – March 2012

We have planted 5 trees

Manorfield Primary School in Tower Hamlets has recently undergone extensive building work to increase the school’s capacity. After months of lessons in portacabins, the temporary structures are gone leaving the perfect space for a new Edible Playground.

In the first year of this project Trees for Cities created an edible playground with a whole range of educational features including a woodland story area, new orchard, natural play space, and vegetable and soft fruit garden. Large canopy trees were added to the more conventional play spaces to create shade. Development of the design was led by the whole school community as they participated in an engaging consultation process involving pupils, teachers, staff, governors and parents.

In our second year the edible playground was extended to include growing and sensory beds for the three Year One classes. Five ornamental cherries were planted to create a natural boundary around the new gardens.

Planting workshop - March 2011

In addition to the planting, TfC have been supporting the staff and parents to develop their skills through a summer gardening club, class workshops, teacher training session and resource packs.

This project is supported by Clifford Chance Foundation, DEFRA Big Tree Plant, Goldman Sachs, Local Food and Manorfield Primary School.

“Trees are a luxury for all of us and we need this luxury for our health, mind and soul. Places become sad when there is no green, no life present. Trees balance our lives. I am happy to support Trees for Cities with all my heart.”
