TUMP 53 - January 2011

This project is running from January 2011 – December 2011

TUMP 53 is a well kept secret and a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation

This former munitions testing site in Thamesmead is now home to a wonderful woodland outdoor classroom including woodland trails, pond dipping opportunities and a purpose-built educational centre. Trees for Cities is undertaking a programme of woodland management and community outreach to help it realise its potential.

The site belongs to Gallions Housing, who invited Trees for Cities to make it more available to the surrounding community. Over twelve months we have created the first woodland management plan for the site, run a series of volunteer days and school workshops, hosted a community woodland fun day and provided free training to local teachers on how to deliver outdoor education with their class groups.

Children's Workshop - August 2011

The community has been delighted to be able to access the area again and be practically involved in its care and maintenance, whilst local school children have thoroughly enjoyed learning in an inspirational and living outdoor classroom.

This project is supported by Awards for All.

“Trees are a luxury for all of us and we need this luxury for our health, mind and soul. Places become sad when there is no green, no life present. Trees balance our lives. I am happy to support Trees for Cities with all my heart.”
