Bridge Street, Bear Island

Following the successful launch of our partnership with Reading Borough Council in November 2006, Trees for Cities’ work in Reading has continued to grow.  In March 2007 we planted six new trees at ‘Bear Island’, Bridge Street, a well-used site close to the city centre.

The trees replaced a number of mature trees that had to be removed due to safety concerns and planting there will also help to reduce the effects of pollution caused by traffic from the adjacent slip road.

Bear Island is a great spot of green space by a lock, which with the re-introduction of Weeping Willow and Alder, now makes a perfect place for a picnic!

Festival Republic, organisers of the Reading Festival, again showed their commitment to improving the local environment, by supporting the planting project.

Trees for Cities relies on donations from individuals in order to deliver projects like the Bear Island Project. Please consider supporting our project work by making a donation or buying a community gift.

“Trees are a luxury for all of us and we need this luxury for our health, mind and soul. Places become sad when there is no green, no life present. Trees balance our lives. I am happy to support Trees for Cities with all my heart.”
