School Orchards in Reading

In February 2010 we planted an orchard of apple, cherry and mulberry trees at Oxford Road Community School. This primary school in the built-up centre of Reading had no green space, and many of the children live in nearby flats without gardens. It was great to have the school gardening club out planting with us - and the trees will provide new opportunities to match the children's enthusiasm for gardening.

The trees were generously provided by Reading IT company Westcoast in celebration of their 25th Anniversary. Joe Hemani, Westcoast Chairman said: "Westcoast are delighted to support this initiative in the local area with which our company has been associated for 25 years. I hope these trees provide a long legacy to Oxford Road school."

If you have an event - a birthday, anniversary or company occasion - which you would like to celebrate through tree planting, please contact Millie on 0207 820 4427 or email millie@treesforcities.org.

The project is one of ten new school orchards planted by Trees for Cities over the past two years. We are extremely grateful both to Westcoast, and to The Reading Festival for making these plantings possible.

“Trees are a luxury for all of us and we need this luxury for our health, mind and soul. Places become sad when there is no green, no life present. Trees balance our lives. I am happy to support Trees for Cities with all my heart.”
