Stradbroke Primary School

In November 2008 Trees for Cities teamed up with Stradbroke Primary School and Ye Olde Oak Foods Ltd to transform an area of the school’s playground into a fruit producing orchard. 18 fruit trees were planted to create the schools very own edible garden.
Stradbroke School children took part in a fruit tasting workshop run by Trees for Cities’ Community and Education Team, in which they sampled apricots, cherries, pears, plums and apples. The children then voted for the fruit trees they want to be planted – with cherries, pears and apples the clear winners. As the trees grow they will provide the school kitchen with tasty and healthy pudding options for the school menu.
The school children will not only help plant the trees on the day, they will also be responsible for maintaining them afterwards – helping children learn about the origins and benefits of fruit.
David Coles, Sales Director of Ye Olde Oak Foods Ltd, commented: “Ye Olde Oak is committed to the development of green spaces and community based tree planting projects. It’s wonderful to team up with Trees for Cities to help them raise funds and create an edible playground for Stradbroke School.
Trees for Cities relies on donations from individuals in order to deliver our Stradbroke project. Please consider supporting our project work by making a donation or buying a community gift.
