Shagbark Hickory, Greenwich Park

Shagbark Hickory, Greenwich Park

Carya ovarta

Notes of Interest

An unusual tree, easily noticeable by its rough, shaggy bark. Forming a wonderful focal point as the path splits. This is one of the largest Shagbark Hickory specimens in the country.

Travel

Walking Directions

From Greenwich DLR follow the signs for the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park. At the Observatory head south down Blackheath Avenue (the long straight road that cuts through the park). Enter the Greenwich Royal Park Flower Garden by a gate just before a cottage on the left and follow the path along until it splits into two. Stand on the path facing between the two branching paths and the tree is directly in front of you – in front of a stand of Holly trees.
