Temple Newsam

Over the years Temple Newsam in the east of Leeds has become a green area dear to all of us here at Trees for Cities. In September 2008 we held our second Tree-Athlon at the historic site, with over 400 runners taking part in this 5km run and raising funds for tree planting at Temple Newsam and throughout the city.

On 28 February 2009 we carried out the next stage in our ongoing project to extend the Ridge Wood thus forming a valuable backdrop to this historical parkland, originally landscaped by Lancelot "Capability" Brown and of considerable local historical value.

We were joined on the day by volunteers from first direct along with their families, and by students taking part in TfC's Plant Your Future programme. In total we planted 6,600 whips in March 2009, adding to the 4,500 trees planted in previous years.

The extended woodland will screen any future development close to the motorway, help cut down road traffic noise, improve air quality and create an idyllic woodland for visitors seeking shelter from the bustle of the city.
