New Trees for Central Estate

About this project

Trees for Cities is working with Hartlepool Borough Council, Thirteen, Tees Community Forest, Treeconomics, the Woodland Trust and local residents to plant new trees at Central Estate, Pheonix Centre, Hartlepool.

This planting location is part of the multi-partner Tree Equity for Hartlepool project — a UK-first using a town-wide approach to plant trees where they can make the biggest difference.

We are currently seeking feedback on the proposed planting design before plans are finalised. We want to hear from you!

Consultation closes: Friday 23rd October 2026

People gather in green space with young, newly planted trees
The local community came together at a previous Central Estate planting day

Why are we planting trees here?

  • Central Estate has one of the lowest Tree Equity scores in England and was identified by local residents as a priority location for tree planting
  • The Tree Equity for Hartlepool project prioritises planting in areas where trees can have the greatest impact on people, places and the environment
  • Following damage to some trees planted in 2026, we have worked with the community to improve protection measures, with 100% of survey respondents supporting replanting

What are we proposing?

To improve the green space at Central Estate for the local community, we are proposing:

  • Five tree planting "bubbles" across the open space, creating new shapes, textures and layers within the landscape
  • A mix of standard trees, young whips and wildflowers to improve biodiversity, support wildlife and provide year-round interest
  • A medium-sized tree at the centre of each bubble, with lower-growing planting that maintains clear sightlines across the space
  • Standing stone boundaries, creating a distinctive "Hartlepool Henge" feature that people can walk through and enjoy while helping protect trees from accidental damage
  • Replanting trees that were previously lost, with additional protection measures to help young trees establish successfully and thrive long term.

We would particularly welcome your feedback on the proposed design and the use of physical boundaries to help protect the new trees.

Have your say

We are now running a consultation to seek community feedback before plans are finalised. We would like to identify resident priorities and preferences around the species selection of the trees, benefits to park users, wildlife habitat creation, and other greening features planned for Central Estate.

Please leave any feedback you might have about the new trees on the form below. You can also contact us via email at HartlepoolEngagement@treesforcities.org.

This form will close on Friday 23rd October 2026.
