New Trees for Owton Manor Estate
About this project
Trees for Cities is working with Hartlepool Borough Council, Thirteen, Tees Community Forest, Treeconomics, the Woodland Trust and local residents to plant new trees at Owton Manor Estate in Hartlepool.
The project area includes three large grassy spaces between Catcote Road and Milne Walk. As the area does not have an official name, we are referring to it as the Green Walkway throughout this project.
This planting location is part of the multi-partner Tree Equity for Hartlepool project — a UK-first using a town-wide approach to plant trees where they can make the biggest difference.
We are currently seeking feedback on the proposed planting design before plans are finalised. We want to hear from you!
Consultation closes: Friday 6th November 2026
Why are we planting trees here?
- Owton Manor Estate has been identified by local residents as a priority location for tree planting, with a low Tree Equity score
- The Tree Equity for Hartlepool project prioritises planting in areas where trees can have the greatest impact on people, places and the environment
- New trees can provide more shade, greener surroundings and benefits for local wildlife
What are we proposing?
To improve the green space at Owton Manor Estate for the local community, we are proposing:
- New trees along the footpath to provide shade for people walking through the space
- Woodland "bubbles" across the green space, similar to those already found near Holyrood Walk
- Planting designed to support wildlife, absorb carbon, improve air quality and provide year-round interest
- A mix of young trees (whips) planted in groups to create new shapes, textures and layers within the landscape
- Tree planting that maintains clear sightlines (for children playing and dog walkers), avoids blocking street lighting and allows space for ongoing maintenance and mowing
