Trees for Cities plant their 2 millionth tree with supporters of the charity

After 33 years of greening towns and cities, we celebrated a key milestone for the charity: we planted our 2 millionth tree!

On March 12th 2026, we were joined by valued friends and supporters of the charity to plant our two millionth urban tree in London where it all began.

To mark this milestone moment, we held a small tree planting ceremony on South Kensington's iconic Exhibition Road to plant a London plane tree on the doorstep of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Natural History Museum.

Planting and establishing many more urban trees in our towns and cities over the coming years is non-negotiable in the face of the climate and biodiversity crisis. But these trees only thrive if communities understand their benefits and welcome them into their neighbourhoods.

Chris Packham CBE, environmental campaigner

We were joined by environmental campaigner, Chris Packham CBE, TV and radio presenter, and nature lover, Qasa Alom and Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy, Mete Coban. Each gave wonderful speeches to highlight Trees for Cities' work transforming green spaces; the benefits trees bring to people; and the need to bring trees to areas that need them most.

Since 1993, we have worked to plant and care for trees in areas of low ‘tree equity’ across the UK, where trees are scarcer and urgently needed. This occasion marked both a celebration of our impact since our inception and solidified our plans for the future, where we will continue to champion tree equity whilst influencing others to join our movement!

Planting trees and creating a greener city is an important part of our mission to clean London’s air and build a better, greener London for everyone.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate our two millionth tree with valued friends, supporters and funders — but planting is only the beginning. The real impact comes when trees establish, mature and become part of the fabric of our urban communities.

Kate Sheldon, CEO at Trees for Cities

Progress is not just about planting more urban trees, but crucially about planting them in the right places and ensuring they are cared for so they establish and thrive!

Planting well-established trees where they're needed most is a key step to long-lasting change and strengthening urban communities. With a consistent and impressive track record of tree establishment, we are planting a tree legacy that will benefit local communities long into the future.

I've seen first-hand how Trees for Cities engages and empowers urban communities in low tree equity areas to transform grey spaces into green, purposeful, nature-filled havens.

This London plane tree will grow to deliver essential benefits to city dwellers!

Our residents are proud of the green spaces which provide a vital job, not only as the lungs of the city, but also as a welcome green space in a densely populated part of London.

Cllr Kim Taylor-Smith, Deputy Leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council

For over three decades, we've been planting and caring for urban trees in cities and towns across the UK, bringing vital green space and nature to the communities that need it most.

We couldn't be where we are today without the support of our passionate and incredible volunteers, partners and funders - thank you so much.

Here's to planting a million more trees together to benefit generations to come!
